Where replies are handled
Four route types carry different reply locations. An embedded texting app puts replies inside the help desk widget. A browser extension puts replies inside the help desk tab. A transcript route logs the conversation in the help desk but sends replies back to the provider dashboard. An automation route connects the two through Zapier.
Textline offers both shapes. Its Zendesk and Freshdesk integrations let you initiate and respond to texts from the top bar widget or ticket sidebar widget, with administrator permissions required in both accounts (Zendesk source, Freshdesk source, read October 23, 2026). Its Help Scout route works differently. Conversations leave transcripts in your Help Scout mailbox, and replies go through an auto-generated link that redirects to the Textline dashboard (source, read October 23, 2026). Your agents read the ticket in Help Scout but answer in Textline.
Heymarket carries a warning worth checking before you choose. In its preferred Zendesk sidebar mode, only replies in the Heymarket Sidebar web widget send SMS. Replies typed into the ticket go to the contact email instead, and a phone number must be tied to the Zendesk end user for the conversation to sync (source, read October 23, 2026).
Text Request takes the extension route. Its Chrome extension lets you text contacts inside Help Scout, and conversations appear in Help Scout for overlapping contacts (source, read October 23, 2026).
Media and ticket history limits
Each route carries documented restrictions, and the Gorgias integrations show how two providers on the same help desk can differ. Postscript automatically creates tickets for every SMS response you receive when the optional Auto-Create Tickets checkbox is enabled, and its setup documentation states that you can receive images and GIFs but cannot send them through the integration (setup source, product source, both read October 23, 2026). Only Gorgias administrators should set up that integration to avoid known technical issues.
Klaviyo restricts the same help desk differently. Its documentation states that you can sync each messaging channel to only 1 helpdesk integration. A customer who sends an image or GIF with a text message will not have the image displayed in Gorgias, and you cannot send MMS messages from Gorgias (source, read October 23, 2026).
Ticket history differs as well. Klaviyo states that replies sent from a Klaviyo Inbox do not continuously sync back to Gorgias, so a reply started in one place may not stay current in the other.
What a total cost check includes
The per-message price is only part of the total. A help desk subscription sits on the other side of every route, and integration plan eligibility and agent seats change what you pay. Text Request documents a Starter plan and above on its side and a Help Scout Standard plan and above (source, read October 23, 2026). Salesmsg requires a seat for each Intercom user who sends texts (source, read October 23, 2026). Other routes do not state plan tiers here, so verify eligibility with the provider. Each provider review carries its own captured pricing.
Customer service texting questions
Can you send SMS from inside a help desk?
Yes, on some routes. Textline documents replies from its widget inside Zendesk and Freshdesk, and Salesmsg documents replies from the Salesmsg widget or the Intercom chat box. Text Request texts inside Help Scout through a Chrome extension. Each requires the named setup conditions.
Does a transcript sync let you reply from the help desk?
No, not on the documented transcript route. Textline states that its Help Scout integration leaves transcripts in your mailbox and that replies go through an auto-generated link back to the Textline dashboard. The ticket shows the conversation, and the reply happens in Textline.
Are SMS support costs comparable across providers?
Not directly. The per-message price is only one part. Help desk subscriptions, integration plan eligibility and agent seats change the total, and each provider review carries its own captured pricing. A generic cheapest SMS plan may not include the integration.
What evidence did this comparison use?
We read public provider documentation on October 23, 2026. We did not open paid accounts, send messages, test response speed or verify delivery. Every route in the table cites its source page and capture date, and an unlisted capability is not proof it does not exist.
