SMS aggregators: what they are and how they differ from a gateway
An SMS aggregator is a company that takes business texts from many senders and delivers them to many carriers over its own connections, so you use one connection instead of one per carrier. An SMS gateway is the entry point a provider publishes for submitting messages. Of the 15 providers we score, 9 state direct carrier connections and 1 calls itself an aggregator.

Aggregator, gateway and direct route
The SMS aggregator
The message path runs sender, then aggregator, then carrier, then the phone. The industry calls an aggregator or provider with direct connections to the carriers tier 1, and one that reaches carriers through another aggregator tier 2. You submit once and the aggregator holds the carrier connections, so you do not need one per carrier.
The SMS gateway
An SMS gateway is the entry point a provider publishes for submitting messages: an HTTP API, an SMPP bind or a web app. Every SMS provider has one, including an aggregator. The gateway is how a message goes in; the aggregator or carrier connection is how it goes out. The SMS gateway API page explains the entry points.
The direct carrier route
A direct carrier route means the provider connects to the mobile carrier itself, with no aggregator between them. Providers state these claims in their own words. Sinch says it "connects directly to 600+ carriers", read on 22 September 2026. None of the 15 providers we score names a US carrier as its own direct route.
SMS aggregator questions
What is a tier 1 SMS aggregator?
A tier 1 SMS aggregator is the industry name for an aggregator or provider with direct connections to the carriers. Bandwidth calls itself "a Tier 1 messaging aggregator, which means we work directly with carriers", read on 9 September 2026.
Is Twilio an SMS aggregator?
Twilio describes its route without the word aggregator: it states "a provider-agnostic approach to how we route traffic", read on 22 September 2026. We report what Twilio says rather than apply a label.
Do I need an SMS aggregator for 10DLC?
